Sometime in the 70's, some NYC bureaucrat came up with an ingenious idea to give pedestrians, waiting for the right of way to cross busy intersections, something to do. They installed these buttons at the corner, instructing people who wished to cross the street to simply press the button and wait for the light to change.

HELLOOOOO!!
Are we stupid??
Did these city officials really think that savvy New Yorkers would fall for such a ruse?

Did they really think that those same New Yorkers who memorize complex subway routes and who know to NEVER pay retail for anything could fall for such a scam.
Did anyone think that by merely pressing that stupid button you could control one of the most sophisticated traffic systems in the world? A system so complex that only a highly sophisticated computer system could be trusted to control all the traffic patterns and timing of every traffic signal in the 5 boros, keeping NYC traffic flowing steadily.
Can you just see an average Joe standing at a typical corner, wanting to cross, pressing a button stopping traffic? Now multiply that by millions of New Yorkers wanting to cross the street and all pressing those ridiculous buttons. Well, most people see them as a joke the city played on us tax paying New Yorkers. Most people don't notice them much anymore. But they still exist. And yes, every once in a while, someone stands there pressing the button over and over and over again, trying to exert some personal power over NYC traffic.
I wonder if that guy is still around? I wonder if that guy is still laughing at us? I wonder how much that guy got paid?
